Four things a contractor will want to know

1. Where the property is. A sloped Red Hills lot in Killearn, a sandy yard near Crawfordville and a hilltop place outside Quincy sit on very different ground, so the location alone tells a contractor a great deal before anyone drives out.
2. The job, in a sentence. Maybe it is a wider drive, a back patio, a front walk with a few steps, somewhere level to park the camper, or a slab that has cracked or dropped and needs to go. Ballpark length and width will do.
3. The heaviest thing that will sit on it. Sedans, a loaded pickup, a boat on its trailer, a motorhome, a spa or shop machinery. Weight drives decisions about stone base, slab depth and steel.
4. What occupies the spot right now. Grass, gravel, cracked concrete or old asphalt, along with any big oak nearby. If something has to be broken up and carted off before the pour, say so.

Snapshots worth sending along

Start with a broad view from the street or the back steps that captures the slope, the trees and the neighboring yards. Then get close on any cracks, dropped corners or crumbling edges. Best of all is a quick shot in the middle of, or just after, an afternoon storm, showing where the water travels and where it sits. Expect a visit to the property. Walking the lot, checking the grade and figuring out how a loaded mixer can get in settles questions that no photo can, and only then can an honest scope and price be written. Request that scope on paper, listing base prep, slab depth, steel, joint pattern, drainage and surface finish, so that one estimate can be held up against another point for point.
